There has been a lot happening for me in the last few months - mostly dealing with cancer issues. I have been a break for 2 mos for family visits in Florida and quilting . Three of my quilts have been entered in the Somers NY show on 5-3-2008. Hope for the best. The tumors in my brain have been under control (no cure). But the quilting has been my saving grace. Now you can see what I have been working on.

Xmas Bears

It keeps going. One project after the other is moving out. Here are the 5 Bears that would have been a Christmas gift to the Pediatric Cancer Ctr at Vassar Bros Med Hospital in Poughkeepsie NY. I wanted to finish these for christmas but between cancer treatment and 3 parties -- you know how it goes. So here they are. I have done these for 5 years after my friend died of leukemia on New Years Day.; she had 2 little boys. Now I am cancer patient and they make me happy. I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas; I did.

Good thing --I took a class (1st one in months) on Landscape quilts from my own photography. It was great to be back in the swing again.

Two new pieces

For Christmas I made to 2 textile pieces which completed today. The first is a reproduction of a greeting card to my husband.-- Moment of Silence. The image of the two young lovers meeting at the train station was especially sweet for my husband and I. My reproduction is a bit changed and only uses the little photo as a transfer. My husband has been my lover and best friend thru the last 4 mos of some pretty tough cancer issues. But we came thru together and most of our life is back ( with a few cancer pills) I'm better now, and sewing and knitting up a storm. My sewing room (31 ft long) is 3/4 done and in use. which he promised I would have.

The second one is called Falling Leaves. It is a gift for my neighbor Flory who has watched over me for the last 4 mos. She would take me to radiation therapy -- she calls on me regularly, ( I am alone so she would worry), Along with a group of friends- every time I needed transportation to get to therapy or a doctors visit, they all took turns -- thanks to Flory.

Truth is since September 2007 so many friends and even strangers have prayed and called on me when they found out my melanoma had reached my brain. The majoriity of the side effects have resolved, so you could say I am 75% back to normal. and live with it as is with continued chemo 5 days of each month. My quilting and knitting have been one of the best therapy's for me. Just before this message you would have seen the pink baby blanket and the bunting. I still have a few teddy bears to make for the kids in the cancer unit at Vassar Hospital Poughkeepsie. In the effort to move my sewing room to its new home I had to get rid of old fabric and yarn. In the last few weeks I have donated 30 very large Zip lock bags filled with fabric and yarn to several groups.

So the good news is I'm back and enjoying life every day.

Catch up time

With the holidays and the cancer treatment it has been a little tough. I finished another baby quilt for niece Elise born 2 mos ago. I made a baby bunting for my first grandson Noah. Of a proud grand ma has enjoyed time with Noah. There is another wall hanging in construction and I still plan on making teddy bears for the children in the local cancer unit (tradition for me)-- Right!!! But I'm still here living life everyday. I added a series of journal quilts called Giraffe Series that you might not have seen bef0re.

As some of you may know I am coming off radiation therapy on my brain. Last week my husband gave me a buz cut and (from the mother of quilting invention) I have this scarf. It made me feel good and face glowed with the batiks I use. It is made with 10 strips but with a rotary blade in wavey bands where you iron down the curved strips and sewing them onto the next one. For me- I put moisture on , button earings, a little make up - and I can face the world. Presently I am seekings ideas to make my scarf - a gift for those ladies who are facing a difficult time with this radiation therapy. A smile and some hope is the small grace I want to give. No sales - just a gift from me.

I took the scraps of those same batiks and made them into a mosaic pattern for the last 12 post cards that are due for Art 07. Pictures will be coming out shortly.

I am a fighter, and my quilt art has helped.

Postcards Exchange #30- 10-2007

The past month of September has been a tough with melanoma and radiation therapy, heavy duty chemo, blood clots in the bladder- (loss my hair) but I am on the mend. My quilting has been my saving grace. Last weekend I went to a quilt retreat at the Interlacken Inn in Ct from Friday night thru Sunday afternoon. There are 50 ladies who come with their machines, fabric and projects (two times year). They have known me for years and they are all wonderful and very supportive. I was only 10 days from leaving the hospital. The owner of the Country Quilter in Somers Claire and her daughter Jane Davila- made the whole weekend so special for me. My husband bought me , unloaded the van with my stuff and then he pick up me again on Sunday. Richie has made a real hit the girls in this group.

I have 2 post cards swaps that were due 9-30-07 The first batch is part of the Art2Mail Exch #30. It is called "Coral Gold"; it is done in series. The inspiration comes from a a book of detail photography of coral fish. This is my artistic representation. These are the last 12 due and will be mailed out today. The second swap is called Art 2007. It also has another 12 due and my plan is recreate a type of mosiac with layers of marine fabrics, with metalic threads green, gold, maybe tulle- just layers - I saw a similar design on another post card that look like the scales of a snake. As an aside- The "molten" quilt shown below was accepted to be pushlished in Katie Pasquini Masupust's book Creating Abastract Art. So The girls all agree- I truly have the soul of quilt artist.

I am on the mend. Stronger every day. My husband is giving me a gift of a sewing studio. It is under construction and should be near completion by the late fall. I have 2 or three projects coming off a mind blowing dreams (in color) about an artist colony- with painters, scuplture, glass, pottery, textile art. The spirit gives a a wonderful gift.

I havent sent much in lately due to some health issues but I do have 2 quilts to show you. The first one is a baby quilt for Noah my first grandson born 7-20-07. The second one is called Molten and started out from a 2"x4" painting and became this enlargement 40"x28". The paint swirl gave me the i nspiration to consider lava rolling and broiling. The rest was just finding the right yellow and red fabric. Inspiration for these comes over time but this one was completed using a new technique that I learned from Katie Pasquini Masopust (class in June 2007) Let me know what you think.

It is a twin bed quilt and uses an abstract pattern with batiks I have stashed away. I enjoyed this project.

I just finished the latest piece for a Journal Challenge 12" x 12" ; this one was due in May but here I am - better late than never. It is called "Old Tree at Waimea Canyon". It comes from 2 photographs taken in Kauia maybe 15 yrs ago. It took a while to decide how to construct it. It is difficult to show the rough brown/rust and vibrant gree of the canyon walls. It feels like painting more than sewing. The theme of this challenge is Photo vs Textile Art. It takes advantage of my own photography which has been a real creative part of me. Hope you like it.

Hawaii has many fond memories for me- We were there for our 25th wedding anniversary.

April Challenge piece

So I completed the April Challenge piece- 12x12- called Skyscraper. It comes from one of my

own photos taken in January 2007. It incorporates a photo image and a free form tree that was in the original. The building glass on the right side was added so that the two would blend. My theme for this challenge is to join a photograph to textile art. Again my pieces only work if there is some inspiration. Lately I have been devoting my time to charity quilt tops. There is a post card swap which I have to start now.

This is a quilt donated to the Quilt Studio as part of their donation for women
of valor-- 40 Service quilts It will be forwarded to a quilter and then returned
to me for the binding. It is a twin bed quilt and utilized my batik stash. There
is lots more and another quilt is in progress. I still have my 12x12x12 to do
for April and a few post cards as well.

I completed the journal portfolio piece for March ( a little late). It comes from one of my photographs from my garden. I transferred the image onto cotton thru my printer. It's the first time I have tried this method. I hope you like it.

Recovery is going good after surgery on my foot last Thursday. I gave up the crutches and the walker today and with just a padded boot on my right foot I have hobbled around the house. This is faster than I had originally thought. This quilting project has taken my mind off my problems. Yesterday I spent time on EQ5 designing another for the 40 Quilt project - girls coming home from trauma. (see Quilt Studio)

Same Day surgery

Here it is Friday and my life has changed again. I had same day surgery yesterday (a very long day) for melanoma. The surgeon did excise the 2 little spots on my right foot but he found another little spot on a lymph node in my groin. The good news is he got it all out and there is none left. The bad news is I have to return to my oncologist for more therapy. Melanoma is very tiny and doesnt always show up on a Pet Scan (mine was negative) so when it re-occurs like mine did, you have to progress to a type of therapy which wipes it out for good. My body is
strong and in good shape right now. I had to resign my job as a bank teller since he didnt think I could stand on my right foot for many hours. He wanted me to concentrate on the therapy first.
This surgeon doesnt hold back and tells you straight out. Sloan Kettering Memorial Cancer Ctr in NYC is known for fine care and so far they have been good to me (two times now). I resigned my job this morning and somehow it feels like I have released the stress; I have been
trying to juggle new job and cancer issues at the same time. Later when I am better I will look for another job.

Now I have time to quilt and do textile art. There are projects piled up in my sewing room. So much I want to do- journal quilt 12x12 and post cards. I have a quilt retreat in April - a quilt class with Laura Breitman in May and another class in June. I think I have a twin bed quilt due in May for young girls (Quilt Studio) too. All this is possible.

Any one had melanoma? Let me hear how you are doing.

This is definitely late but my intentions were good. What follows is the actual photograph I took in Kauia in 1992. This is my 12x12 submission. The delay occured with another bout with melanoma and the start of a new job. Life always gives me ups and downs. But I am still here marching. Now I am pushing to catch up with the work I had planned on doing.

Baby Confetti

This is the top for the baby quilt I have prepared for the 40 Service Quilt Project. The
quilt will be donated to the Children's Home in Bethesda Maryland. The outer border is slightly larger so that it can be wrapped around to the back and thereby become the binding. The batting should be cut maybe a half inch smaller than the top. I have fabric for the backing and alkong with the top, it should go out this week. The pattern came from a book called "Tried and True -New Quilts from Favorite Blocks" the actual pattern is called "Nine Patch Nuance" by Lynn Ahlers.

New year starting

Well this year started with a visit to the oncologist in NYC and he agreed that I had 2 little spots of melanoma on my right foot. (same place as before) These last 2 weeks have been tense and frightening. The PET scan and cat scans were done this past Monday and on Thursday my doctor called to tell me they came out negative. Great news for the start of 2007!!! That means those 2 little spots will either be cut out (same day surgery) or there will be a therapy using a serum prepared from the antibodies in my own blood- immunotherapy. It is much easier and there are no side effects because they use your own blood. It has a good success ratio.

So now I can look forward to starting a new job and waiting for my son and his wife to have their first baby- I'll be a grandmother!!! This year should be a great year.

The pictures I added were taken on the second day I went to the city and it was a glorious sunny crisp day. I was using my new camera Nikon D40 digital SLR and it worked perfectly. As you may have noticed from the past- my photography is a part of me and has been for many years. This camera finally brings me up to the present digital camera standard and of course after shopping around this was the best buy for money. It is not hard to use since it has several automatic features. My prior camera was also a Nikon SLR but it used film.

At present I am sewing a baby quilt for a donation for a Childrens Home in Maryland. My art quilt work is in between things looking for a new inspiration. Maybe these NYC photos would help. There was a 12x12x12 portfolio challenge which I sent in 1-12-2007. There is always something.

Since the theme of my challenge is Photo vs Textile Art , I believe these next two pictures are of some value. I was at the Vanderbilt Mansion in the late fall with a photography group. This comes from my Nikon camera FM2 which uses regular film. In this age of digital cameras, it's odd that I still use a regular SLR camera but it has been with me for more that 20 yrs on many vacations and field trips. My photography is as much my art work as the textile work is which is where the idea for this challenge comes from. As textile artists we should utilize the camera for those special moments and creative ideas.

I am pushing post cards since they are due by 12-15-06. They are very small art pieces
but they have ideas I can enlarge and go further.

I sent a message to quiltart.com that I wanted to pass on to those of you who read my blog
The subject is inspiration and art themes.
Inspiration comes in an instant and when you least expect it. It impels you to see the idea.
It begins with fabric and then it grows as you see that creative idea blossom.-- never knowing where it will take you. There is a special joy for you to suddenly yes- there it is. It comes in a
dream and you wake and there it is- it wont go away.

Art Themes are sometimes easy and sometimes hard. I believe for me art themes come easy from those "dreams". I find for me abstract challenges are difficult to visualize since my mind
works best in reality than the abstract. Visits to the Guggenheim Museum or the Whitney in NYC display more abstract or modern art and each time I find them difficult to appreciate. Yet the art at the Metropolitan Museum in NYC or the National Gallery in Washington DC reveals paintings which are beautiful. Art themes work best in those areas where your creative inspiration thrives.

Post Card Fall Tree#2 11-2006

This is the second one of the "Fall Tree" series. In reality it is the first one I made.
The inspiration came from a walk around the Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park NY
where the fall trees were raining down leaves. I tried photographing it but the
raining effect just didnt come out as I had visualized it. It seems to me this could be
expanded into a Journal Quilt for November with the falling leaves floating down.

Fall Leaf Post Card 11-2006

I just started my post cards for the Post L'Arte round 4 and came up with a quandry. I dont know which one I like better. A and C were done with light backgrounds and one bar of black. B' was done with black as the background and the light accent fabric as the bar. Also B' has been outlined in gold accent thread where the other two have not. So here is question- which one do you like- A' - B' - or C'?

Been Busy

Its been a while since I came by. This last month I started a new job that is filled with tension and stress. It has taken all this time to relax with it and feel that I can cope. Now on the weekend I can devote myself again to sewing. I completed my monthly journal quilt for October. This has been an effort to make all 10 of them different. Personally I thought that would push me ahead creatively. The "Walk in the Woods" is developing an original artistic rendition instead of using just my photography.
At present there is an enlargement of my echinecia's (from the garden)-- it measures 30" x 28" and it takes time till I see where I want it to go. I start it and then go back and work a little more and walk away and see if I like it. I'm sure there are others of you who use that artistic method. "Dandeneau's Garden" was like that. Its almost there.
Post cards are due for another swap group and is on my table to get started. My quilting- and creative sewing projects are good medicine for me. I keep coming back to them.

A Walk in the Woods- Journal Quilt Challenge 10-2006

I'm late for this one but the inspiration came last weekend when my son and his wife came by. We were walking in the woods with the 4 dogs and I saw bits of this piece. It came together after a few days.- sort of works on the brain. I hope you like it.

This past weekend I went to a 2.5 day quilt retreat held at the Interlaken Inn in Ct. It was great fun seeing my friends who are crazy like me. I noticed that I was one of 3 ladies who is
into quilt art vs traditional work. This has been my graduation of sorts. Below are two pieces that were pushed ahead. Fish Tales..... is for the Tiny Treasures which is another challenge. This time I worked at using beads to embellish my work along with some free motion stitching and applique. This piece was an extension of the previous birthday card. I have another one in my head with another fabric which is even more interesting as fish scales. Maybe this time I can try sheers which I saw on the fabulous web site of Rosemary Claus Gray.
The second piece Dandeneaus Garden has had a little more work and closer to its end. The sun rays thru the clouds still need help. Maybe some sequins or hand stitching of metallic thread will help. Any ideas will be appreciated. This week I have to work on October's journal quilt.
I am working full time now and finding quiet time to work is harder.

This has had some improvement over the weekend. The light rays over the house and field are not as evident in this picture as I would have hoped. My husband believes that I should add a few more trees in the dip of the right side. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

New idea

This idea comes from an exhibit at a craft show in Rhinebeck NY held last week. The artist told me the idea could be used again with different artistic themes/scenes. He is a retired art teacher who sells his small acrylic paintings at various craft shows. The exhibit is built of two wood rails (painted black) that have a groove (on top and bottom) to allow slats to slide along. Each slat (4" x 10") is canvasboard that has been been painted (acrylic paint) each in a different color scheme of a city scape. He had prepared enough slats so it measured 2ft across. You can interchange the slats by sliding them along the board -- one in front of the other. These scenarios can be changed for the fall or the summer or the spring or fall. You could prepare slats with mountain scenes or sea scapes showing sunrise or sunset. My thought was fish swimming by in a window pane. As they swim by they change color. This example was my first attempt and it really is a birthday card for my neighbor. It measures 4" x 8" and fits a legal envelope. You could mail out your own birthday card to family or friends. Of course it is made of fabric. So what do you think of my "Fish Card"? There are so many possiblities to this idea. The whole rack of slats could be set up on a mantel or a shelf in the living room. I do have another fish piece in the works right now for another challenge which is asking for a work 10" square. When I do these the hard part is the background.

When I put in the post cards there was one that I just had to do again- echinacea. Well my husband's garden served as a reference and here is the result. I have some dyed fabric with the sharp pink that called to me. Just do it. Please let me know what you think.

Overdue Journal Quilt

This is a catch up day. Just finished this journal quilt for August. I had this upholstery fabric that was very interesting. Sometimes the fabric just talks to me. I do have another one in my head- the echinacea in the post card should be developed again. I still have more of the dyed fabric from Judy Robertson. She sends me a beautiful yard each month and each time I have a hard time cutting it. Right now we have Jax- sheltie puppy running around so it 's tough finding a quiet time to work. I think I will give you his picture- then you can see how cute he is. Talk to you later

This morning was the last push for 5 post cards for Virginia Spiegel's worthy cause. They should go out in the mail today. I am a cancer survivor (last year) so for me this has a special meaning. I still have a few more ideas in my head which will go out next week.

For this week there still is another journal quilt for August due. There are two pieces going out for "Doing Small Things" a Fiberarts Challenge -- also this week. They need sleeves and labels but the entry forms and fee have been turned in on time. Amidst that I have a twin bed quilt top in the works for my nephew Tommy and today I am hoping to pick up a new puppy. So how much more can you pack into a few days.

The puppy looks so sweet. We have a springer spaniel Chico at home (see the "Many Modes of Chico" on web site-- www.jeanneoberrieth.com) ; he is alone and needs a buddy. I've been searching on the internet for sheltie's and found this one 3.5 hrs away. My husband and I have had dogs as pets for 15yrs since my only son left home for college. They are part of the family and have been there for us during good times and bad. Dogs just love you.

A Month has past

Well lots has happened- travels mostly and a bad cold. From the travels there are photos that inspire. There are a couple I want to share with you. We went to Virginia to visit my son and his wife and several shots came back either from the Nikon 35mm or from the digital camera (it surprises every time how good pictures come out). The first one I call Vineyard Trellis and was taken at the Hillsborough Vineyard where my son and his wife were married in 9/2004. It talks to me to reproduce it in fabric yet creatively I am still pondering the color of the timbers in the trellis or the shadows in the gravel. The second shot was taken of an old barn door- that could be re-produced in different shades to exemplify the old decay wood. This needs fabric that is dyed to show the old stains. There is a whole series of barn and silo shots as well. Then there is the pile of locust wood which in my head I see in black with dotted thin lines and orange for the centers with tourquoise shades as the contrast. There are several shots of the wood pile that could be appliqued in my own drawing and then enlarged on to larger back ground sheets of paper. The wood pile is interesting to me since it has different lighting and bark textures that could be expressed in fabric.

In the between all of that I started a twin bed quilt for my nephew Tommy who started college. Not done -- in progress. Then in this last week I was completely flattened by laryngitis and a full chest cold. It has taken till now to feel human again. Of course to add salt to the wound the air conditioning went out and it has been difficult to even enter my sewing room in this heat. The repair man is due tomorrow. I have post cards to make, a Journal quilt for August is due and now there are a couple of quilt art pieces (described above) that are pushing at the brain.

There is one shot of the rear end of my son's new puppy Jelli- which I would like to re-create as a pair to the other Blue Baby's Bottom. I havent come up with a good name but it will be similar -- maybe in another color family. Let me know if you have any ideas.

This art piece is still in the working stages- The inside measurements are 12"h x 34"wide. I was drving by this corn field near my house when I saw these heavy grey storm clouds. I went home and started sketching what I saw. The actual scene has a farm house and trees along the horizon. This is my interpretation but there is something missing. The lines on the white image are green. In the clouds there is silver free hand stitching which may be hard to see. I know this is my interpretation- but I'm stuck and open to suggestion.

This could have one of three names- "Baby's Blue Bottom"-- "Blue Bottom Baby" or " Blue Baby's Bottom". Let me know which one you like. We could have a vote. This was great fun. The rose fabric on the left fanny could be considered -- "a fanny smelling like roses"". It is my artistic license. Each of my journals teach me something new- this time it was color value. But I enjoyed this one the best of all the journal quilts.

This work came from a visit to the Georgia O'Keefe museum in Santa Fe. The inspiration was sort of sudden and wouldnt let me go. In the past I have worked on a 24"square piece of batting and begin a circular pattern. This one started that way; it told me(?) to try out several shades of bright yellow. In my stash there is a luscious fabric with lovely leaves- and there you are. Collage has so many fun things you can do; the work keeps developing. As you can tell - I had fun!!! This form of letting loose seems to entice me to try something new and different.

I know in my last message - there were plans to re-create my photographs. That is still there. In addition - I still have to finish my Post L'Arte postcards and June's Journal quilt.

The other day driving by a new field of corn on a rolling hill- with black/grey storm clouds overhead and a sliver of a blue sky in between-- all on a panorama viewing-- very wide and very short. This image has stuck in my head and everyday I drive by that place -- it rings in my head----- Do Me!! Do Me!!! In the last few months- my sketch book has had more entries. Where ever I stop- out comes the sketch book. Its like you see something in your imagination and wont let you go --- until sketch it out a few times and then maybe it pores out in the fabric and my art. Where does this come from?

Anyway for once the artist in me has come out and I'm having fun.

Again this is a kernel of an idea. While I was having lunch at this restaurant-- I started sketching on the paper table cloth-- this window was just outside in the courtyard. My idea was to work with Photoshop and re-create these window shapes in different opacities and in different sizes. I kept the paper tablecloth and brought it home.

Just Back from Santa Fe

We had a lovely short vacation and took advantage of the great weather just before their heat wave. Santa Fe has so many art galleries and museums. We spent time walking all over town- some old mission churches, the pottery, Georgia O'Keefe museum and lotsa of Mexican food. On Saturday of Memorial Day weekend we had a special dinner at the Geronimo (reservations required) for our anniversary of 39 yrs.

In addition we visited Los Alamos, Bandeleir National Monument and Taos. It was great fun to take my Nikon out again. Years ago we had visited 9 National Parks in Nevada, Utah and Arizona so we are very familiar with the west. It is a bit striking to go from the green lush valleys of New York and then fly into Dallas and Albuquerque- flat desert. Fortunately Santa Fe is at a higher elevation (7000ft) so the temperature is slightly lower and no humidity.

Part of my photographic expedition was to take shots for "still Life" pieces which has been added to my various projects. These photos are now showing on my Webshots.com gallery which you can find at joberr124. It is called Santa Fe and Bandeleir. In one photograph there is a ladder going up to a cave dwelling. Unintentionally it came out in a Black and White setting even though the film was in color. I'll take it as is- for me it works in a textile format. There was scrub brush and cactus which were also very interesting. In addition the shot of 5 flower pots with a shadow might fit in with the theme on the still life group. As you can tell this was an inspiring trip in a different space and time. I needed this.

This trip gave me several other art images to work with. While we were eating lunch at a restaurant in Taos - I started drawing on the wax paper table cloth. Together with my husband we put together an image over an image of three adobe windows with the camel colored stucco and the bright blue window frames. We packed the paper table cloth in his bag. I couldnt resist sketching the ideas that were popping into my head.

The trip was too short. Back to reality

This week my blocks from my last class were completed into two wall hangings. The first one is cut up or scrambled. It is called Mixed Salad. The second one is called Salad Plates. Truth is when the first set of blocks were done they didnt come out too good and I needed to be creative in their construction. Those were done with thin batting behind them. The original fabric was all fruits and vegetables. The cherry fabric will be added as a border. The second one is the original pattern from Diane Hire's book Quilters Playtime. -- pattern called Tiddly Winks (circles inside circles) Each of those blocks has muslin as the backing. Also I changed the pattern a little to make it come out correctly. Both of them will be sold as wall hangings for the kitchen.

So far my web site using Google advertising has not produced any responses. Has anyone used Google? If you have a better way to get your website out there and selling- please let me know (www.jeanneoberrieth.com) They are very expensive.

I am so looking forward to going to Santa Fe this weekend with my Nikon camera. Years ago we went to Hawaii and I devoted myself to finding great pictures. Of course Hawaii is a beautiful place and it is easy to find a lovely pictures. Back in 1971 my husband, his mother, brother and myself spent a month traveling around the West- 9 National Parks, 3 major cities, in a plane, in a boat, a jeep, sand track truck, on horse back- from 32* tp 105* - it was one of the most fantastic trips I have ever been on- My mother in law is a great planner. So that is why Santa Fe (which we missed last time) should be a special place. It is so different to where we live now in New York where there is so much lush green trees. In addition there are yarn/wool shops in Taos where they dye the yarn in beautiful colors. I'm sure this will inspire me to try something- like "Portals". There is a new challenge coming around on the Quilters Studio (Delphi Forums) where they are asking you to create an original piece based on the word "Portals". It is not fully organized but the discussion is rolling along.

What strikes me now as I look at these two last pieces, is every week my imagination seems to go down a different road. From fairy wings to vegetables------ before that it was pink Pretty Pooches. Do you work that way? Or are you more organized-- working in a series? There are ladies who are determined to finish every project and others who have several pieces in progress at the same time. Which are you?

The last two weeks have been a little hectic. This past weekend I went to The National Museum of Art in Washington DC and the Hershon Gallery. The National has some beautiful art work as well as an exhibit of DaDa and small French paintings. But the art exhibit at the Hershon was most impressive since I gleaned some new ideas for my sketch book. I found a piece made of string by Ernest Neto and a painting by Calder (not a mobile!) that were very interesting. Of course the sculptures were impressive as well.
Afterwards my sketchbook was filled with several drawings for future pieces.
My son was very kind for Mothers Day.

Today I completed several post cards and my Journal piece for the Challenge in May 2006. The theme of this Post L'Arte swap #3 is fairies. This gave me an opportunity to use the angelina fiber, film, toule and sparkle dust. 20 cards are due and this is only the beginning-8 are done. The Journal piece used the left over pieces with an overlay that looks like a fairy's wing. It may be difficult to see in this picture. It's strange that I have postponed making this one and in a moment it appeared.
There are some blocks with appliqued circles from a class 2 weeks ago that have to be completed. The class suggested a traditional layout which just doesnt work for me. They need something to push them up a step. Of these one set require more work --- those will be sliced up and sewn together in a more abstract format. The theme was fruits and vegetables.

Last Wednesday there was a doctors appt in NYC. The appt was done at 3PM and I was 4 long blocks from Museum of Modern Art. Off I went for a quick visit and found a series of George Braque and Picasso which finally struck me. If I made a realistic textile piece and then sliced it up I might approximate the impression given by those two artists. It does take me a long time to appreciate what abstract art is trying to say. (Back to my sketch book)

This week I will be home for 3 days just sewing. My volunteer job at the local hospital goes 2 days a week. I find it personally fullfilling.

The last few weeks have been personally difficult -- Aunt Betty died of ovarian cancer within 6 weeks of receiving the diagnosis. The family asked me to help her and my Uncle Dave with the medical information, securing records and visiting specialists. My emotional heart chilled out for a short while and when she died it hit me hard. Since I am only 9 mos post surgery for melanoma surgery--- successful and recovering well--- my own spiritual progress has been delayed. The doctor's appt confirmed that my cancer surgery is proceeding well and no further chemotherapy or radiation therapy or surgery will be considered. I am recovering.

So I am looking forward to a short vacation in Santa Fe for Memorial Day weekend; this is our 39th wedding anniversary. It is our first real vacation in 18mos. We both need it.

Last Saturday there was a funeral for my Aunt Betty who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer-- only 3 weeks ago. Since I am a recovered cancer patient - my family thought I was the right person to help her. Between the medical information, the doctor visits and providing moral support to my beloved Uncle Dave-- I was wrung out. In the middle of all this I received the registration numbers for the quilt show in Somers NY -- great news- and a photo of my new nephew Nicholas laying in the baby quilt I recently made for him.
So on Sunday I went back to my sewing room and made the Journal Quilt for April. It's called flight for obvious reasons. In my sewing room with my classical music, the world goes away and I can escape. This little "quiltlet" has been sitting there in pieces and I couldnt concentrate until the other family stuff was done. The pieces were moved around and around till it felt just frustrating. Nothing looked right. My husband gave me a quick sketch of what the fabric was saying to him and I went with his idea.

There was a quilting class in the last 3 weeks which was completed last week. It utilized the fruit and vegetable fabrics which I won at the quilt retreat. That should be put together this week.

In addition there are fabrics waiting for me -- these belong to the post card swap which is now in progress. The proposed theme is Fairies"" and I do have an idea. The plan is to work a panel of layers with Angelina, silver film, sequins, beeds?? , tulle and metallic thread. My hope is that it will look like fairies wings; the next step is to sew along a grid - measuring 4" x 6" and cut them apart. These cards will need the edges to be finished off with a zig zag edge and also the backing will be applied with the name and address. In one of my previous emails I was asked how did I embellish my work. Last year I took an Art quilt class at the Country Quilter, in Somers NY. Several of the classes addressed embellishments which can be done in several mediums. --- beads, metallic thread, Angelina, stamping, foiling, overlays of tulle, filming, painting, resist dyeing, collage, applique or couching of other substances (branches, leaves, paper, yarn), iron on photo images on fabric. Your imagination can just go for it.

This week starts a formal schedule at the local hospital - volunteering 2 to 3 mornings per week.
It allows me to be helpful providing information at the front desk and using my Spanish. My hope is to one day to work there.

But quilting and sewing is my therapy. I really need this creative release. The sad part is over and now I can enjoy the spring. The trees and flowering bushes are in full bloom. My yard is so colorful with all the flowering plants that my husband has prepared.

A friend told me that it is not wrong to sew artistically on one piece per week and then go back to quilting and make something pretty and classic. Thinking back over the last month - it seems to me that is exactly what I have done. One thought is that I should take one of my creative ideas and try it again and again with improvements. My quilting ideas jump from one thing to another depending on the fabric or the latest class or the latest mood I'm in. Does it seem like flitting around? The stash is large enough - that I could run with various ideas for months to come.

I heard there was snow in Colorado this week. The weather has been a bit strange all over the US. But here in the Northeast - this has been a glorious spring. Today the temperature went up to the 70's!!

Quilt Retreat

This was a wonderful 3 day retreat where I finished two small pieces (seen here previously) and started another basic block pattern called Fabric Fling. My quilting friends were so good to me and it was great seeing every one again after a short absence.

It has been my practice to venture out to new colors and approaches to my quilting and quilt art. Pink and black are not my favorite colors. So I intentionally brought a bucket of my most playful bright colors and let it talk to me. Sometimes as artists we become accustomed to the same family of colors- gold/browns or blue/green/purple or black/white or cream/tan. You get it. My really favorite color combo is blue/green/purple. My sewing room has many buckets of quilting or batik fabrics which cover that family group. So I will be showing you this example (which is a work in progress) It is called "Pretty Pooches in a Puppy Pen". My husband and only 'at home critic' states I should return to working with quilt art pieces which I will do but this one was fun and there is a strong color contrast and movement.
In the discussion there is a thought- to quilt or to do quilt art. As you may know from previous emails, I am still a traditional quilter but quilt art is a new venture. Sometimes your confidence or your inspiration may not be strong. As an artist you need to feel in your heart that piece works. I havent really found that - but I'm getting there.

Good news! About two weeks ago I went to my favorite quilt shop where owner/friend told me it may be too late to enter my latest two pieces in the quilt show in Somers NY on May4,5 2006. She gave me the name of the coordinator who told me that the registration was moved back to March 1st. So we ended our conversation that I should plan on it for next year. An hour later she called back and assured me that if there was room-- my two little quilts would be added (just not in the catalog) Judged too. I was so happy. My last 6 mos have been a test - entering these little quilts was so important to regaining my life. The two choices are "The Many Moods of Chico" and "Ripples". Both of these have been on this blog previously. The point is not that I am expecting big awards or recognition, it means more to me that this is the first time for this show (which is pretty big around here) to take courage and show my work. The first time ever was 6 weeks after my surgery and I rolled around the quilt show in a wheel chair. So this is progress. I'm walking-- no wheelchair. Anyway many years of quilting and preparing quilt art have gone by and no one (other than family) has seen it.
Spring is glorious. The forstheia are in bloom. I'm off to my sewing. By the way I volunteered at the local hospital for 3 days a week. That felt good.

The March submission for the Journal Quilt Challenge is done. It is really only the kernel of idea which could be developed. I need to try this again, which is the advantage of a journal quilt.

Today is the first day of a 3 day quilt retreat, I have been so looking forward to this (after all that happen in the last 6 mos) It will be great seeing my friends again after missing the last one in September. There are 50 ladies who attend this retreat 2 times a year. They have quilting styles which are traditional as well as unconventional or maybe a better word is artistic. I range somewhere in between. The place- The Interlaken Inn located in Lakeville Ct is lovely; the accomodations and meals are well prepared. They have treats and drinks at the breaks and you can work until you drop. I have been known to be working until midnight and up again at 7AM. It starts on Friday and ends on Sunday at 4PM. There are no kids, no phones and no family interruptions. You can work with a design wall and let the inspiration carry you. The ladies are so nice and all of them encourage you. If you get stuck with a technical issue there is someone there to help. I always come home inspired to charge ahead and my family knows that everything else is set aside for this. My husband has seen the happiness on my face when the retreat photos come back. This is one event I would encourage quilters and quilt artists to go for.

Well the pineapple blocks are done from the class and it is now called Ripples"" It is a traditional block but the color and design have impact and I am pleased with it.

After a visit to my favorite quilt shop the owner (and friend) told me there was an outside chance I could enter the quilt show in May 2006. I contacted the show organizer and she said although it was late to put in a description to their catalog there was a chance they might have room. So I am crossing my fingers and I did send in two registration apps. For me this is a time of renewal, courage and future hopes. Quilting and these art pieces mean so much to me so say a prayer for me. This is my first time submitting quilt work to this particular quilt show.
There is another quilt design in the works which comes from another class with Quilt Univ called Structured Fabrics. It takes bright fabric strips in a plaid format or a layered structured format to create another textured fabric. This allows me to try different layering techniques which may open depth and dimension.

There are so many things happening right now between the quilt classes, new quilt art, preparations for quilt retreat new week and personal problems with my aunt Betty and my brother in law, I think I deserve an afternoon off.

There are two pieces in different stages of design work. My creative system starts out with a drawing and design idea in my sketch book. Then the design turns into a computer drawing on Corel Draw and then collecting of fabrics occurs. The piece will take shape in fabric on a basic level; then it sits on the wall for a few days (or weeks) to see if it works. I might add something or make changes. The penguins are now at that level. A few days ago I woke up with an idea that wouldnt leave me, without even a cup of coffee, I dragged out the sketch book and later that morning went directly to the computer and Corel Draw. Everything else was dropped. Does anyone else go thru that immediate response or mental decision--? Now or never or lose the inspiration?? I wish I could understand how that works; it doesnt seem to be orderly or even at the same time of day or place.

Inspiration

So my two Quilt Univ class's have inspired two pieces all involving fabric that has a water theme. Pulling out my favorite blue- green- marine blue- tourquoise and light blue-- for the pineapple blocks made it easy to consider a journal piece from the scraps. Today the inspiration came to a head; I couldnt stop until the journal piece was done. The nice thing about this is -- you could expand -- "Lagooon"-- into something much larger. My husband believes it looks like a mountain scene. The pineapple blocks are not done; there are four more corner blocks in different shades of black - to blue- to green which will make this into a small wall hanging. These blocks were done as a paper foundation and the paper is still attached. The next class asks for an off center block; the teacher has suggested there will be more design possibilities. Since the Journal Quilt class has two more weeks- that means two more journal quilts will be coming. Let me know what you think.

Here it is my home work plus "the Ghost". Foot Loose"" has some personal meaning for me as a Journal Quilt both for class at QU and also for the Journal Quilt Challenge. There is so much behind that surgery (9/2005) to remove melanoma cancer from the bottom of my right foot. They say acceptance is part of recovery. Emotionally this is only 6 mos old and still a little sensitive for me. Not only was there surgery on my right foot (after 8hrs and 9days inpatient and 3 mos limited at home recovery) but also the skin graft was taken from my left wrist (2" in diameter) which left a sizeable scar. When you lose your independence - there is so much to think and appreciate all the things you use to do and cant. I'm back - out and about and almost as active as before. Life marches on.

The Pineapple block is the beginning of a quilt I had planned to do when I was operated on. I missed out on a class given near by. So this QU class has opened up a great opportunity to expand on a traditional block and expand the design.

The Ghost"" now has more of the free motion stitching, beads and sequins as well as angelina fiber (as the white snow blowing). There is fine netting over all the bead/sequin work as well as some metallic thread and "sliver" thread. The tree itself has some silver thread work as well. This piece could be redone in a smaller version for the journal quilt class. It tends to give you a dark mood.

This week I worked on another piece- Ghost in the Tempest" This has been working on my mind for the last couple of weeks. There is additional embellishment work to be done to make it look more crystalline and snowy. It will be added to my website. It takes time for the inspiration to work up into an actual piece.
This week I enrolled in two classes with Quilt University- Perfect Pineapples and Journal Quilts. The second one works the creative juices in small works. They both started today and have 4 classes - one each week. In addition there was another class offered in March that uses fabric with interesting prints to create "Structural Fibers" -- again this uses more creativity with existing printed fabrics into interesting artistic formats. Check out their classes - they have various different classes offered. In April there is a further quilting class where a lovely wall hanging in soft green batiks will be appliqued into leaf shapes of different sizes.
So all this should get the motor running and active again.
What a joy to see a work space in my room after I cleared out some of the clutter last week.
No matter what time of year- spring cleaning is always necessary.

Today is the day! My new website is open and this a new beginning. I want to thank Gloria Hansen for all her help since we were able to work together so well. She connected the web site to this blog. In addition I have opened a photo album with Webshots- http://community.webshots.com/user/joberr124 to display my recent works both in quilting and in knitting which has recently captivated my attention. Knitting socks can be an addiction. There are two more projects for quilting (stormy skies with a ghostly tree) and a bird. which still is in progress. Inspiration runs differently now that I am retired.
This past weekend was spent organizing and cleaning up my sewing room. What a pleasure to find the floor. It makes more conducive to work in here. I moved out maybe 7 buckets of fabric and moved them downstairs to a rack of shelves (that's on roller wheels). This way my room now has only the active work at hand.

My hope is that this web site brings new customers and business for my retired life-- to begin again.

Latest quilt work

So this little piece has been on the table waiting for the finishing touches. It still needs a back and finishing edge. I have two options - one is to make an envelope with the backing face to face with the front. Then turn it inside out. Once the backing is on- then I was thinking about adding a zig zag thin stripe in a very light blue or metallic one inch inside the edge- as if it were a window. The second way is to add the backing - traditional way and then apply a simple binding using the blue background to three sides and purple to the bottom. This binding has to be very thin. Then the same zig zag stripe in light blue could be applied. This quilt measures 20" x 29" and is made by applique in dyed cotton and batik.
Yesterday it snowed heavily and I spent the day inside knitting. This morning the sun is very bright on the white snow. I have this sunny day to quilt and finish projects I had started. There are two more in the works.
